Sunday was a good day for a Barlborough couple, as they both picked up winners medals at the Retford Half Marathon.

Gareth Lowe won the overall race, at a canter, while wife Louise won her age category, completing a famous double for the Clowne Road Runners.

Are idyllic, romantic training sessions the key to the couple’s success?

“God no,” said Gareth.

“Her pace hurts me, it’s too slow for me, and we’ve three kids so we can’t get out training at the same time really.”

A finishing time of 1:10:43 gave Gareth first place overall, and a three minute winning margin.

It was the perfect warm up for his main race of the year.

“This was a bit of a tester race for me, ahead of the London Marathon.”

“I was pleased with the run, it was good to see how training is going.”

With the London Marathon looming on 25th April, the Clowne Road Runner – who only took up the sport seven years ago – is targetting his quickest ever time.

“I’m hoping to run about 2:25, or hopefully a bit quicker, but I would be happy with that, it should be a personal best.”

Louise finished as the fourth lady home in 1:30:10, and although it was a personal best and good enough to give her first place in the Ladies Vet 35 category, she wasn’t entirely happy.

Her husband said: “She was just 10 seconds outside of an hour and a half, she was a bit gutted about that.”

It was a remarkable day for the Road Runners, who had another happy couple on the Retford roads.

Dan Page finished second, behind clubmate and training parter Lowe, in at ime of 1:13:34, taking victory in the male senior category.

And his wife Holly completed her first ever half marathon in a time of 1:55:21.

Over 1,000 runners and supporters converged on Retford on Sunday for the 2015 Half Marathon and Family Fun Run.

The Retford Athletics Club event was based at Retford Oaks Academy once again and attracted local runners, as well as many from across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and other parts of the country.
