Solid defence guides Worksop to opening night win

Worksop came out on top in an entertaining opening night in SBL Div 4 as they beat Storm 2 52-44.

Joe Robinson and Lib Gwitira both bagged double-doubles, including personal best points tallies, as Worksop dominated inside.

Storm relied on their long range accuracy and had no answer when Worksop switched up their defence to close out the game.

The first half was an even affair with neither side able to forge a significant lead.

Eight points from Gwitira and six from Robinson helped Worksop into a 21-20 lead at half-time.

A 10-0 run early in the third sent Worksop clear for the first time, but Storm hit back with three threes in a 12-2 run to conclude the quarter on level-pegging at 37-37.

Gwitira and Adam Drabble netted early in the fourth as Worksop edged ahead again, but another three from Storm kept it close.

Worksop then made the defensive switch and kept the Storm scoreless for the next six minutes, while building a decisive 10-0 run to seal an opening night victory for just the third time in the club’s nine season history.
