Sheffield v Nottingham: battle of the goalies

It takes a special kind of goalie to eclipse the success of Sheffield Steelers’ Tyler Plante so far this season.

The netminder has two shut outs to his credit and a 93% save ratio. But there is one ‘keeper who can top that.

Nottingham Panthers’ Miika Wilkman edged him into second place in the EIHL top goalie chart after posting a 94% save average and has faced a lot more rubber than Plante.

But a clearer comparison between these two will be available to fans when Sheffield face Nottingham for the first time this season, tomorrow.

Plante took over the key position from Frank Doyle and Josh Unice.

And asst coach Darrell Hay is confident he will make a similar impact as the previous incumbents.

Hay says all teams want their goalie to be their best player.

“He is stepping into shoes filled by Josh and Frank, they were fantastic last year, they did what we asked them.

“The thing with Tyler is he’s doing what we ask him. I give him credit, he is a guy who wants to get better who goes out early in practice and works on his craft and his game. He helps our back-up goalie out a lot too.

“He is helping him get better and that is what you want from an older experienced guy,

“Tyler has been every bit the goaltender we’d hoped and if he can keep this up we are going to be really happy with him.”
