Darrell Hay will be happy to continue strapping on the skates if Sheffield Steelers coach Paul Thompson wants him to.

The 35-year-old has been appointed assistant coach at the club, but the d-man would not mind lacing up the boots again, if the coach feels he needs a deeper bench or there are injuries to cover. “I am going look after myself the way I always do” he said.

“I feel like I do a good job in looking after myself. If I need to suit up in a game I will be ready.” Last season, Steelers won the League but lost the Play off final.

“I would describe the highs and lows of last season as textbook sports - there will always be ups and downs” Hay reflected.

“I believe playing in a hockey crazy spot like Sheffield really magnifies those though.

“As player you realize you are playing for a lot of other people than just the 20 guys in that dressing room.

“I don’t think there was one moment that rang true as this is the team that will win a championship. I thought we showed a lot of resolve after Christmas, when we struggled. We were able to go into some tough buildings down the stretch and beat some good clubs. I think that showed the character of our club more than anything.”
