If Sheffield Steelers are going to win back-to-back League titles, it will because of their defence-first mentality, says defenceman Jace Coyle.
The 25-year-old Canadian, who won a title earlier in his career in the WHL, believes a strong blue line and resolute goaltending are the key ingredients for success.
Thankfully, he sees the South Yorkshire side as having both those qualities.
Coyle, who scored his first goal for Sheffield last weekend, lines up against Belfast Giants, at the Arena tonight.
“We are a team built on defence first, we have a strong goaltender and it goes on from there” he says. “From our d-corp into our forwards. That’s our mentality.
“We close teams down and take away the good scoring chances. It enables our forwards to come down the ice with some creativity and make plays.”
Coyle says it is important to take nothing for granted, despite an excellent start to the 2015-6 campaign.
“But the way we have been playing lately and the different types of games where we have come out with victories it’s been pretty good so far.
“We have a great group of guys in the locker room.”
Coyle accepts that the League is the principal target in the UK game.
“It’s a different set-up to what I am used but I think its good, it means every game every night is important.
You have to be ready to play.”
