Sheffield Steelers provide festival of goals - but too many in their own net

Goals, goals, goals - Sheffield Steelers just love ‘em.

They have averaged more goals than anyone in the Elite League and Challenge Cup so far.

The problem is they conceded more than anyone too!

The goal glut is making for a fascinating season - and sets up an interesting weekend with Steeler games at Braehead Clan (Friday) and Belfast Giants (home, Sunday.)

Forward Luke Ferrara is hoping his side can stem the flow of goals past Ervins Mustukovs over the weekend, especially against a Northern Irish side who have recorded some good away wins recently.

“Belfast are a skilled team, they have four lines of players like we do and they can play all night” said the 23-year-old right winger.

“We will have to be focused from the first minute to the last. We have to be really tight defensively.

“We have to have a good game, build from there, we know we are going to get chances, so be confident in front of the net.”

Giants’ 34-year-old British goalie Stephen Murphy has some competition for his place from newcomer Jackson Whistle, a young Canadian, so it will be interesting to see who gets the nod.

Murphy is in his eighth season with Giants while Whistle joined from the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets.

“Murphy has been around for a while, maybe that will be an advantage because we have played against him and know what he is like” said Ferrara.

“It will be different playing a brand new goalie.

“A goalie can’t save a shot if he can’t see the puck and that is what we try to do, get traffic in front of the net.”

Ferrara said offensively his team was doing well scoring lots of goals. “Defensively we know we can be better.”

Of his own netminder, Mustukovs, the forward said: “He is playing well, he is doing what we expect of him.”

But the team had ‘hung him out to dry,’ lately, he said.
