Fredrik Vestberg may end up being the surprise package of the Steelers roster of 2015-16.

The 32-year-old forward is different to the rest of the Sheffield line-up in that he is the only European home-grown player that coach Paul Thompson has recruited from the continent.

While other new employees have played in leagues in Scandinavia and Europe, they are all north Americans by birth.

Thompson says his memory of coaching against Vestberg, and the player’s stats, made him a strong acquisition.

“I have been working in that overseas market for a couple of years and one of the main reasons Elite League teams have not had that many Swedes is they could not afford them.

“There are some great players playing in great leagues over there and many of them end up in the DEL, KHL and NHL.

“Vestberg has good skills speed and is a defensively is a good two-way player.

“He always played very well against my team over there - too well. He stuck in my mind because of all the goals he scored against me - he was a real thorn in my side!”

Thompson said that there would be competition for power play spots this year, and left winger or centreman Vestberg would be one he’d be considering.

Vestberg has spent the last eight seasons with Almtuna IS in the Swedish Allsvenskan division, the second-highest league in the Swedish ice hockey programme.
