Rob Dowd normally concentrates on the goalie at the opponents’ end of the ice.
But the Sheffield Steelers winger is happy to acknowledge the feeling of security at having netminder Ervins Mustukovs guarding his own team’s goal.
“It’s great having him back in Sheffield – you look at him and you have confidence right away that things will be ok” said the forward who has scored in two of his side’s games so far.
“Moose was a great goalie for us back when we won the league some years ago. I think he has come back even better. He is in great shape, I think he is a bigger goalie than before.
“Moose doesn’t say a lot, he just stops pucks. That’s all you want from your goalie, you want him to make that first save and he does that.
“Look at the leagues he has played in since he left us. Denmark, Sweden, France and of course appearance for the Latvian national team. He has been one of the top two Latvian goalies for the last six years, that’s some going.
“In Sweden, Moose was outstanding, he made huge saves at critical times.
“Against Red Bull we didn’t help his cause at all. We left him exposed and the Salzburg powerplay was just too good” said the Brit.
“Moose loves to play games, I think he is a perfect Elite League goalie, he will give us a chance to win every night and retain our championship title.”
Mustukovs will backstop Steelers on Saturday as the side takes on HV71 of Sweden in their third Champions Hockey game.
He’ll doubtless be in for a busy night. He had 41 shots to contend with last time he played them and a further 38 in the second CHL game at Red Bull Salzburg.
