Sheffield Steelers ran Coventry ragged in the Challenge Cup qualifying round match at Sheffield Arena.

The South Yorkshire side now look very much on course to progress through to the knock out rounds.

Steelers had beaten Coventry 4-0 at the Skydome a week earlier, Tyler Mosienko, Colton Fretter, Mathieu Roy and Levi Nelson doing the damage.

But it was even worse for the Play Off winners this evening.

Two solo first period goals put Paul Thompson's men in the driving seat .

Fredrick Vestberg scored first tonight, lashing high inside Brian Stewart's inside post at 4;59.

At 7;51 it was 2-0 with Levi Nelson scoring unassisted after a break through the middle.

Coventry were chasing shadows for much of the first period.

And if that was bad, worse was to come.

Tyler Mosienko was the star of the show as Sheffield took the period 3-0.

Rob Dowd got the show going after the first interval, firing in from the right flank at 21;51.

Five minutes later Mosienko scored with the goalie grounded and then added another on a short-handed breakaway.

At 5-0, it was getting horribly messy for Coventry, who didn't seem to have anyone able to change the one-way flow of the game.

The only question was whether they could find any self-respect in the last 20 minutes.

That they did, but they couldn't break Tyler Plante's shut out.

After the game, coach Thompson said he was delighted with recent results, but did have a brief word with his team about the way their Power Play offence dropped off in the last period.

*The Belfast Giants inflicted a pair of defeats on the Edinburgh Capitals, the second a 5-2 Elite League win that took them top of the table.

Friday's Challenge Cup match between Belfast and Edinburgh had been erroneously ended at 3-3 by the officials, and hence Saturday saw the Giants clinch a 4-3 victory in the overtime period played.

In the league meeting, James Desmarais and Michael Forney scored a brace each and elsewhere, the second-placed Cardiff Devils sneaked a 5-4 victory in overtime against the Braehead Clan, Guillaume Doucet doing the game-winning honours.
