Pair of Wheelers taste success

On the cycling race scene, two Retford and District Wheelers riders had very successful outings.

Christopher Hilbert, the club’s youngest member, scored a great win in the 10 years old event at Thoresby Park on Saturday 17th May.

And first category rider Dominic Smith won the Scunthorpe Poly circuit race at Blyton Park on 20th May.

Two club members, Steve Hilbert and Glen Allison, rode the Etape in Yorkshire – the 123 mile route of the first stage of the Tour de France.

This was a charity ride on 8th June, and sponsorship would still be appreciated from fellow riders and club members.

The Tuesday evening Time Trial events on the Torworth circuit started on 3rd June and will run for the next six weeks.

Anyone wishing to ride can simply turn up on the night and sign on.

Only nine riders completed the club’s ride to Thorne lakes.

The cyclists followed a route via Gringley, Haxey, Sandtoft and Moorends with the advantage of a following wind.

The Wheelers group arrived at the destination soaked, it having rained all the way there.

The return journey was by the most direct route, taking in Lindholme, Bawtry and Ranskill.

All the nine riders committed to a good work rate, sharing the pace making into a strong headwind, and making a good time back into Retford.

Last Sunday the Wheelers rode to Rother Valley.

Retford and District Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in its present form since 1986, although historically there has been a local club in Retford circa early 1900s.
