A Worksop powerboat ace will take on the UK’s best young talent when he competes at the Honda RYA Yough RIB Championship on Sunday.
George Baxter, a member of Girton Sailing Club, will be in action at the PSP Southampton Boat Show.
The 11-year-old will go head to head against the 13 other regional eight to 12 years age-group champions at the national grand final, after he clinched the East Midlands regional title in May.
This is the second consecutive year that Baxter has qualified for the national final, finishing 10th on his national debut in Southampton last year.
But as keen as he is to improve on that result this time out, the youngster also has a slightly less predictable aim for the event.
“Last year I learned not to wear gloves whilst drinking hot chocolate,” he said.
“I spilt a cup all over my hands whilst waiting for the results and ended up in A and E with bandages on both hands.”
“I have been practicing my driving a bit in the last few weeks.”
“The boat we use for the finals is so different to the one that we use at Girton and I was really pleased with how I adapted to that in the regional final.”
Now in its 13th year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is Britain’s leading programme introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers.
