Ben Swift picked up his first win since July 2012, when he finished first in stage one of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali in Italy last week.
The Anston rider, wearing the colours of Team Sky, sprinted to success on a short, 99.5km route starting and ending in Gatteo, to carry the overall lead into last Thursday’s team time trial.
A delighted Swift said: “I’m really happy to finally get that win under my belt again.”
“The team were just unbelievable and it all happened so smoothly.”
He retained the lead when, along with team-mates Pete Kennaugh, Dario Cataldo and Vasil Kiryienka, he won the team time trial.
Team Sky enjoyed more success when Swift sprinted to second place on the penultimate stage, before Kennaugh went on to win the overall by 12 seconds with a storming final stage.
