Next Tuesday the Bassetlaw School Sports Association will play host to the finale of the district’s Sports Hall Athletics calendar, with the prestigious District Final Competition at Elizabethan Academy, Retford.
The event will host seven of the best primary school teams who will battle it out to be crowned the district champions.
With 33 teams taking part in the family of schools Year 5/6 Sports Hall Athletics event so far, six teams have emerged winners and have a place in the final, Carr Hill, (Elizabethan), St Augustines, (Portland), Redlands, (Valley), John Blow, (Tuxford ), Dunham on Trent, (Tuxford) and Serlby Park Juniors (Serlby Park).
And with the final school being identified from Retford Oaks Academy’s family of schools event, in which eight teams are involved this week, 492 children have been in athletics action so far.
The children, aged nine to 11 years of age, have competed in running events including sprint races and hurdles, throwing events such as javelin, seated throw and 2kg chest push and jumping events like the long jump, triple jump and speed bounce.
All events work on the basic principles of running, jumping and throwing and encourage young people to give it a go, try their best and most importantly have fun.
All children are encouraged to continue their enjoyment of athletics by attending their local athletics club, whether it be Retford Athletics Club, or Worksop Harriers, both of which would welcome their attendance.
The winning school team of the Bassetlaw Year 5/6 Sports Hall Athletics final will represent the district of Bassetlaw at the Sainsbury’s School Games county event in February 2014.
That event will be held in the centre of Nottingham.
The Bassetlaw schoolkids will be competing against the best school teams from across the different districts, boroughs and the city, within the county.
