Worksop Welfare Cypriots A chose a bad time to slip to only their second defeat of the season in Division Three of the Worksop and District League.

A sizeable win in their last match of the season would have put them in the driving seat to take the title.

After overcoming Real North Notts B 10-0 the previous week to go top on sets difference from Sparken Hill Blue Jays, the Cypriots knew a good win would put the pressure back on the Blue Jays.

The Cypriots, at home against Sparken Hill Falcons and with the unbeaten Farhad Saiepour in their line-up, must have gone into the match full of confidence.

Saiepour did his bit by beating all three Falcons — Mick Potter, Jordan Potter and Neil Penny.

The Falcons hit back, however, as both Neil Penny and Mick Potter beat Nigel Stent and Kay Wilson in tight games before Jordan Potter defeated Wilson.

In the doubles the Cypriots opted not to play their best player, Saiepour, and it backfired as Wilson and Stent and lost to Mick and Jordan Potter in four sets.

That proved vital as the Falcons ran out 6-4 winners.

To make matters worse for the Cypriots, the Blue Jays beat DTH Redlands Tarr Babies 6-4, meaning the leaders missed the chance to push home their sets difference advantage going into the final week of the season.

The Blue Jays, who have been without their number one player for the last two weeks of the season, had a tough night against an ever-improving Tarr Babies as they just scraped the win.

Connor Bettley beat Keith Bloomfield, Roman Rosser and Adam Pinches to set the Blue Jays up for victory.

He also had a hand in the doubles success, teaming up with Dave Rix to beat Pinches and Rosser.

Dave Rix and Dave Lee added a win apiece.

Cypriots lead the division on sets difference from the Blue Jays, who know that a draw in their last match against Worksop Owls will clinch the title.

Elsewhere in Division Three, Sparken Hill Hawks had a comfortable win over bottom-of-the-table DTH Redlands Red Devils, whi have battled hard in their first season.
