Worksop’s most famous sporting export was hoping to contend at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, like he did in 2008 when he finished second.

But the tournament didn’t get off to a good start, Westwood finding himself three over at the turn on Thursday.

An eagle at the last hole rescued the day.

Westwood had an early start on Friday, but heavy fog delayed the start of the second round.

When he did get underway, it wasn’t to be his day, shooting a four over round of 76.

At five over for the event Westwood missed out on the weekend’s play.

America’s Rickie Fowler won the tournament, going 16 under, a shot better than Belgian Thomas Pieters, and two better than Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.

Westwood returns to action on 4th February at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club in Dubai.
