Maltby Thai boxers prepare for Celtic show

YOUNGSTERS at Maltby Thai Boxing Club are busy preparing for one of the country’s top fight shows next month.

Barnsley Metrodome will play host to the Celtic Championship Challenge on 4th February, with many of the UK’s best junior fighters in action.

Five local Thai boxers will take to the ring, including Flynn Tomlinson, eight, Ewan Hickling, 10, Josh Swift, 10, Owen Tomlinson, 11, and 15-year-old Jade Kelemen, who is hoping to have an opponent after several attempts to get someone to fight her in the past.

February is going to be a busy month for the Maltby fighters, as there are shows happening every weekend with some competing whenever possible in a tough sport that involves kicks, knees and punches.

Maltby club instructor, former British and European kickboxing champion Phil Glover, wants to have an even better year than 2011.

He said: “Last year we had quite a good year with the juniors and our club is now beginning to have a strong team of fighters.”

“I am looking forward to our club getting bigger and better in 2012 and the Celtic Championship Challenge will be a great start for everyone.”
