Lindrick golfer takes Northern title, Lyle in Westwood Tour event

After such a good summer for golfing weather, anticipation was high for the inaugural North of England Open Amateur Championship at Pannal Golf Club.

A great field was assembled, including a Walker Cup player, and several England B and England Boys team members.

Unfortunately the good weather did not hold up as expected and after the first round was completed, play on both the second and third days of the championship was washed out as heavy and persistent rain made the course unplayable.

The Northern Counties Golf Union organisers declared the first round leader as the winner.

Daniel Wasteney from Lindrick Golf Club became the proud holder of the new trophy, generously donated by Gill Shaw and her husband John, next year’s Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs president.

Wasteney’s excellent round of five under par 67 was matched by Daniel Sutton from Walsall Golf Club but the Lindrick England B player took the title on a count-back.

Worksop teenager Emily Lyle will tee off in the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Players Championship on Saturday, battling it out for a visit to the Lee Westwood Golf School in Florida.

The golfer is in action at Gainsborough Golf Club at 10am.

The winner of the Lee Westwood Junior Championship scratch trophy has gone on to taste further success.

Brad Tomlinson was selected for England regional squad trials, before going on to win the Nick Walling trophy at Worksop Golf Club.

He was Player of the Week at Worksop’s Junior Captain’s week, and then finished fourth in Rotherham Golf Club’s Junior Championship.

Paired with Reece Samson, Tomlinson also won the Henderson and Carlisle Trophy.

Brad’s father Tony, a teaching professional at the Peter Cowen Golf Academy, runs a junior academy at Worksop on Saturdays.
