Lee pulls out of French Open

Lee Westwood has withdrawn from next week’s French Open, to give himself time to prepare properly for the Open Championship at Muirfield in July.

The Worksop golfer, who finished 74th at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut last week, says his recent schedule has taken a toll.

He said: “It is with much regret I have decided to withdraw from the French Open.”

“A long run of events has left me fatigued.”

“With The Open so close I want to get myself into the best possible condition.”

The Travelers was the 40-year-old’s 15th tournament of 2013, and began well as he started with a three-under round of 67.

A three-over round followed on Friday, and although he improved by shooting a 69 on Saturday, the final round was a disappointment as he finished with a 78.

His next outing will be the 142nd Open at Muirfield, Scotland from 18th July.
