The 40-year-old, who visited his home town before travelling to Wentworth in Surrey for a first round alongside Ernie Els and Francesco Molinari.

Play was suspended with the group on the 11th, and when it resumed he finished off a two-under-par round in a share of eighth place.

Friday’s second round was played in difficult conditions, but Westwood stayed under par with a 71.

It was his performance on Saturday however that pushed him up the leaderboard, shooting a four-under-par 68 to move eight under, one shot behind leader Alejandro Canizares.

Sunday was disappointing for Westwood though, a one-over-par round seeing him drop to tied ninth.

The former world number one admitted he was troubled by his swing.

He said: “I’m struggling with my swing a little bit at the moment and when you’re in the last round it just gets found out.”

“The main problem is I haven’t got a safe shot, so I can’t turn in hard and see my shot fade.”

Westwood is in action this weekend in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, for only the second time in his career.

He practised on Tuesday and played in Wednesday’s pro-am to get a feel for the course, before teeing off in round one with Billy Horschel and Martin Laird.

Mark Foster tied for 24th place at Wentworth.

The Worksop Golf Club export finished four under par and picked up €45,838.

He plays this weekend in the Nordea Masters, at Bro Hoff Slot in Stockholm, Sweden.
