Late goal denies Worksopa big win

Worksop started strongly and took the lead when a long ball was collected and laid off by Jules Draycott for Ailsa Gray to finish well.

The visitors continued to create chances throughout the first half they mainly controlled.

In the second half Worksop felt umpiring decisions went against them.

However, they successfully defended six penalty corners before a deflection routine brought Uni level.

Worksop remained an attacking threat and another lay ball to Jules Draycott was laid off to Esther Gray, who smashed into the backboard to restore the visitors’ lead.

Good workrate in midfield and excellent defending, including by man of the match Rebecca Hetherington, preserved Worksop’s lead.

However, with a few minutes remaining the home side won another short corner and this time converted it to make it 2-2.

Lisa Sankey was named player of the match for good work in midfield as Worksop Ladies’ 3rds drew 0-0 at home against South Notts.

Worksop pinned the visitors in their own half for the opening 10 minutes.

Resolute defending and outstanding saves kept Worksop out, even after a series of penalty corners.

In the second half Kelsey Richards and Emma Pike had numerous shots on goal, but the home side couldn’t find a way through.

Visitors West Bridgford 5ths proved too strong for Worksop Ladies’ 4ths, winning 8-0 with four goals in each half.

In the early game at Worksop College, a very strong West Bridgford started quickly and stunned the home side with a fortunate goal in the first minute.

Worksop tried to weather the storm, but the visitors proved to be too strong and soon doubled their advantage.

The game became a tough test for Worksop who, despite working hard, were having no luck.

The visitors took advantage, adding a further two goals before the half-time break.

Worksop put some pressure on the visitors in the second period but couldn’t convert that into a goal-scoring opportunity.

The home keeper, Lorraine Robinson, made a series of outstanding saves to keep the visitors out, stopping the ball four times in a barrage of shots.

Despite Worksop’s resilience, West Bridgford scored twice in quick succession to put the game beyond doubt, before adding a seventh strike.

Just as the final whistle was about to be blown, the visitors won a penalty corner and slotted home to complete the 8-0 victory.

Worksop’s player of the match award went to defender Mel Truby for solid work at the back.
