Joggers win classic cup tie

DTH Redlands Joggers and Manton Sports were this week involved in a fabulous cup match with the outcome not being decided until the very last shot of the match.

The handicap system saw the Sports team of James Weston, Alan Wilson and Keith Smith start 51 points ahead of the Joggers before a ball had had been hit, but the Joggers got off to a great start as Lewis Comley beat Weston 21-6,21-17 to reduce the deficit to 32 points.

Matthew Mudd then beat Wilson by seve points and when Mudd and Dennis Learad beat Weston and Smith in the first of the doubles games by eight points it meant that the Joggers were only 17 points behind with six games still to play.
Wilson then beat Learad by seven points to increase the gap to 24, but then Comley did well to beat Smith by six points to bring the gap back down to 18 points.

Sports hit back in the next doubles game with Wilson and Smith beating Comley and Mudd 19-21, 21-10 to yet again increase the gap to 27 points and swing the tie in the Sports favour. 
In the next singles game Learad defeated Weston by nine points and when Mudd could only beat Smith by seven points both sides thought that the match was over and that Sports had won by 11 points and even started to take the table down but an astute General Secretary who had gone to watch the match pointed out that there was still a doubles game to play.

It left the match situation with a simple scenario, DTH Redlands Joggers had to win by at least 12 points to make it through to the final and when Learad and Comley only won the first game 21-17 it looked as if Manton Sports were firm favourites to win the match, but then an inspired run of points by Comley changed the course of the match and they managed to win the second game 21-13 to run out winners by a single point winning 488-487.
Back to league matters now and after 17 league games so far this season it was a week for firsts in Division One.

DTH Redlands Roosters surprisingly lost their first league match of the season with Manton Nomads enjoying a terrific 6-4 win which was even more remarkable as the Nomads had to play a player up from Division Two and although James Weston didn’t win a game all night he played well and was great nuisance value. The star of the show was Sarah Short who won all her three games, which included a first league defeat of the season for Tom McIntosh as Short hit top form. She was superbly supported by Ian Henderson who beat both Steve Fox and Rick Harris to win two of histhree games before teaming up with Short to win the doubles, which ensured all three points went to the Nomads.
The other ‘first’ in Division One this week came when Ryton Park Adders finally won a league match at the 17th time of asking.

Their win came against their club colleagues the Eagles who despite a Dave Kirkup hat trick couldn’t quite do enough to stop themselves slipping to defeat. The Adders’ Ivan Guilliatt and Harry Tomlinson both beat Alex Olliffe and Brian Allen with Andy Lee adding a single win over Olliffe to get the Adders to five games with Guilliatt and Tomlinson teaming up to take the doubles against Kirkup and Allen to get them over the winning line.
