Increase in Sports Awards nominations

THE feelgood factor of the London 2012 Olympics and the success of the Bassetlaw Games have been followed by a huge increase in nominations for the annual Bassetlaw Sports Awards.

This year there have been 72 nominations across the 11 categories.

British swimming legend Mark Foster will be on hand to dish out the awards, at the ceremony on 7th December at Retford Oaks Academy.

The ceremony will feature ballet displays from Retford Oaks Academies performing arts students, a table tennis display from Bassetlaw’s very own table tennis star Sam Walker and video footage of this year’s Rising Stars athletes.

Crystal Lane, a Paralympic cyclist from Retford will introduce the rising stars as well as sharing her experiences representing GB this summer in London.

Foster, an Olympic, Commonwealth and European Championship medallist will offer an insight into the career of an elite athlete and will present the awards to the winners.

Coun Julie Leigh, portfolio holder for environment and leisure said: “The sports awards recognises the actions and achievements of Bassetlaw’s sporting community.”

“This year’s event promises to be a fantastic climax to what has been a superb year of sport and I am delighted that Mark Foster and Crystal Lane will be there to share their experiences of competing at the very highest levels.”
