Horse-racing ‘Tip Of The Day’ — Saturday November 10

Doncaster stages the final day of the turf flat season today. Here’s hoping we can mark the occasion with another winner.

Saturday November 10

KIRTHILL

Doncaster 2.35 EACH/WAY

The last big race of the flat season, the November Handicap, is one of the most competitive and difficult to solve of the entire turf calendar. But it looks tailor-made for this lightly-raced four-year-old, who has been a typical slow-burning project at Luca Cumani’s Newmarket yard. The colt’s inconsistent form had not reflected his high reputation at home -- until he showed dramatic improvement for a step-up to today’s trip of 12f when defying top weight and a wide draw at York’s Ebor meeting in August. A quiet run, back at 10f at Newbury a month later, kept him on the boil and still feasibly handicapped for a crack at this pot. In a hot renewal, I have plenty of respect for the favourite, First Mohican, while Andrew Balding’s Communicator is improving fast and should go close too. However, the little bit of give in ground will be ideal for Kirkhill, while jockey Kieren Fallon knows the horse well and Cumani’s record at Doncaster, particularly in these all-aged handicaps, is very good.
