Historic trip to the seaside for Dinnington

An emphatic display by Dinnington, especially in the scrum, saw them record their first ever victory at Bridlington and only their third in all meetings.

Dinnington made a good start to the game as they moved the ball through several phases from the kick off only to lose possession in a tackle.

The visitors were able to keep the pressure on as Bridlington gave away penalties and with 10 minutes played Jonny West kicked Dinnington into the lead. Bridlington responded strongly and should have gone into the lead when breaking from a scrum but knocked on and the chance was gone.

Dinnington made the home side pay for the error as from the next scrum Will Marshall made an initial break before passing onto Neceedo Petersen who opened up the home defence.

He was able to offload to Ollie Rodgers who them put West in for a try.

West also added the conversion and Dinnington led 10-0 mid-way through the half.

Dinnington were slowly getting the upper hand in the scrum and stole the ball from the home side only to give away a penalty at the next breakdown.

This was the first penalty they had given away in the game with 30 minutes played and Bridlington took the chance to kick the three points.

Dinnington replied straight away when Bridlington were penalised at a ruck and West restored the 10 point lead.

The home side then had a player sent to the bin and Dinnington stretched their lead with another penalty with a minute of the half to play.

However, Bridlington took full advantage of some rare poor tackling by Dinnington to claim a converted try as the half went into injury time.

Even then there was still time for Dinnington to respond and they won another penalty which was advanced nearer the posts.

West had to wait to take the kick, as another home player was sent to the bin, but was off target and Dinnington went into the break 16-10 ahead.

Dinnington made a strong start to the second half and were unlucky not to get any reward following a 40 yard break by Danny Pilkington.

Five minutes into the half West landed another penalty from just inside the home half and as the pressure again built on the home defence, Bridlington had their third player of the afternoon sent to the bin.

Dinnington moved the ball across their backs from the lineout that followed and after working the ball through several phases put Rob Levers over in the corner.

The Lodge Lane men then increased the pressure on the home line and won a series of five-metre scrums.

Marshall was held up as he broke from the back but Dinnington were able to move the ball quickly and Levers scored again. West added the conversion.

There was no respite for Bridlington as Dinnington attacked from a free kick to be held up just short of the line.

However, Dinnington pressure at the scrum had Bridlington all over the place and the referee awarded a penalty try which West easily converted. Bridlington turned the tables in a rare moment when they took a quick tap at a penalty and made ground before Dinnington had fully recovered.

A couple of rucks set the home side up for a converted try but Dinnington came back and finished the game strongly.

At another scrum, Dinnington won the ball and a break by Tom Doughty set up David Longstaffe for the visitor’s fifth try of the game and West rounded off the scoring with his fourth conversion and a personal haul of 25 points.

Dinnington return to the East coast again, tomorrow, when they take on Scarborough, currently the only unbeaten team in the division, hoping to complete the double.
