WESTY’S WINNERS!

The 15th running of the event was blessed by glorious weather and a course in immaculate – but challenging – condition.

More than 60 juniors battled it out for top prizes from PING, Titleist and Dunlop and the two prestigious trophies for the scratch and stableford competitions.

Westwood was on hand to give an insight into life as one of the world’s best golfers, his experience at The Open at the weekend and his planned move to America, in a question and answer session with Guardian sports editor Graham Smyth. Around 150 golfers, friends and family packed the clubhouse on Windmill Lane to applaud the prize winners and show their appreciation to Worksop’s most famous export.

Seventeen-year-old Bondhay member Oliver Breeze was crowned scratch champion, while Connor Stansbury, 15, defended the stableford title he won last year on his home course.

Westwood was delighted to be involved yet again.

He said: “They’ve always been great days, but this is a very special one – we’ve had some wet and windy conditions over the last few years and it’s nice for the kids to turn up today and be able to play in the sun, there’s only a slight breeze to tease them.”

“I get asked to do a lot of things for charity and obviously junior golf is close to my heart and I came through the junior programme.”

“It’s nice for the kids to have good tournaments to play in around good courses and I’m a great believer in competition.”

“I like to give them as many opportunities to play as possible.”
