Lyle wins county championship title

The teenager was victorious at the end of October at The Nottinghamshire course, shooting a round of gross 75 (nett 73).

A member at Worksop Golf Club, Lyle told the Guardian the timing of the tournament win gave her a confidence boost.

“I was really pleased, as it was the last major competition of the season,” she said.

“After being picked for the English Select Squad training starting this weekend, the win came at a good time.”

“There were four other girls who play for the county who could have won the schools championship, so I’m very happy to have won it.”

Lyle settled her early nerves by picking up a shot at the very first hole, before going on to play to her handicap and lift the trophy.

She said: “I always get nervous on the first tee and on this occasion we started with a dog leg par five.”

“My partners teed off first and used a three wood but they both looked short so I used my driver as I did in the practice round, and with a good shot to the corner I had a view into the green.”

“This gave me a chance to pick up a birdie that helped me relax and get in to the game quickly.”

Despite a couple of dropped shots on the front nine Lyle performed solidly on her way back in and had high hopes as she finished off her round.

“My playing partners had dropped more shots so I was hopeful that I had done well enough, but mindful that the others girls behind me could have also played a good game,” she added.

The victory comes at a time when Lyle is working hard with a professional to improve her technique, with a view to picking up a big win in 2012.

“I am still making changes to my game with John King at Lindrick,” she said.

“So I’m not as confident at the moment with my game, but I hope to be well prepared by next Easter, ready for the Scottish U16s.”
