Frustration for Westwood at Wentworth

LEE Westwood’s competitive return to British soil saw him finish with a share of 33rd place, at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Worksop golfer, who lost in a play-off to Luke Donald in 2011 at the same event, was unable to replicate that performance as he finished one over par.

Eventual winner Donald was 15 under, with fellow Englishman Justin Rose and Scot Paul Lawrie four shots back in second.

In Thursday’s first round, Westwood carded a two under par 70, putting him four shots behind joint leaders Lawrie and David Drysdale.

Friday’s play was affected considerably by strong winds in the afternoon, making Westwood’s second round tricky as he teed off at 12.40pm alongside Graeme McDowell and Thomas Bjorn.

Dropped shots at the first and third holes were followed by three consecutive birdies. But that momentum ended with a double bogey at seven.

Westwood rallied on the 13th by picking up a shot, but once again failed to cope with the swirling wind and dropped one shot at 16 and three at 17, when all three golfers hit wayward tee shots into the same set of trees.

A birdie at the last quite literally saved the 38-year-old’s weekend as he made the cut, just.

Saturday saw him shoot a two-under round of 70, almost notching a hole in one, as Donald went into the lead on 11 under par.

Westwood’s final round began badly, opening with a bogey and then a double bogey at the third. A birdie and two further bogeys had him four over par going into the back nine where he had two birdies to finish on 74 for the day.

He moves on to Sweden next week for the Nordea Scandinavian Masters, in preparation for the US Open on 14th June.
