Bondhay beaten in Foursomes Salver

OWSTON Hall became the proud winners of the inaugural Inter-Club Knock-Out Foursomes Salver when they defeated Bondhay Golf Club in a very closely contested final at Lindrick.

Due to the popularity of the knock-out foursomes event, The Salver was specially commissioned this year and was open to all the clubs who were first round losers in the Sheffield Union of Gold main knock-out championship.

Owston Hall managed to negotiate their way through the first and second rounds against Dore and Totley and Crookhill Park before booking their place in the final at Lindrick with a win over Hallamshire GC in the semis.

Bondhay came through the earlier rounds against Chesterfield and Abbeydale and overcame newcomers to the Sheffield Union, Waterfront GC from Wath-upon-Dearne in their semi-final.

In the first of three very close matches in the final, the two teams finished all square after 18 holes with the Owston pairing of Barry Staniforth and Anthony Haines pipping Martin Skinner and Andy Marples on sudden death.

In match number two, Bondhay’s Andy Tingay and Arthur Mellars got the better of Steven Parker and Matthew Lowes by 2&1.

In the decisive final match, Owston Hall’s Bryan Chapman and Paul Wilson defeated veteran player Steve Cammack and his partner Peter Jackson from Bondhay by 3&1 for a famous victory.
