Friendly thrashing

WORKSOP returned to valley for their first home friendly of pre-season, and thrashed Newark 8-1.

With a few changes in personnel and blooding some of their youth, Worksop struggled with their fluent passing game and were frustrated during the early exchanges.

With Sam Gawthorpe patrolling the right, it was he and Arthur Nash who appeared most likely to provide Graeme Robinson and skipper Simon Cardwell with a chance to open the scoring.

As short corners came and went, the ball finally found Robinson as he broke on goal and he lifted the ball over the keeper.

If the hosts thought they were to have things all their own way they were to be mistaken.

Newark carved out an opportunity of their own, but fortunately a back line of Unwin, Purnell, Burns and Walker held firm.

However the visitors did equalise only moments later with a sloppy goal of their own.

Worksop hit two quick goals before half-time, with Gawthorpe firing home a booming strike and Robinson adding a tap in after great work from Nash.

After the break Worksop took control, albeit against a tired opposition.

Five further goals rattled past a shell shocked Newark stopper with some great finishes from Mackenzie Glasby, Arthur Nash, Dec Fuller and a brace from Robinson.

Worksop take to the field next week in Derby for their final friendly.

Man of the Match was Luke Burns.

Elsewhere the third team lost 4-3 to Grantham’s first team.

As usual it was a blend of youth and experience who pushed a physical Grantham side to the end and can take credit for a gutsy performance.

The second team will play Derby Asterdale on Saturday at valley, at 2pm.
