Worksop Town U21 player Bailey Armstrong on juggling work and football in the non-league

Born in Worksop, Armstrong has spent his whole life in the area and signed for the club in the summer.

Having finished school at the age of 18, Armstrong is currently half-way through a plumbing and gas engineering apprenticeship.

And he feels that the hardest challenge playing non-league football is finding a way to play, whilst managing to maintain his job.

He said: “I work full-time for my dad, and he has had to put me on my own contract, so I have to work late sometimes.

“Since work pays the bills, that has to take president, but it’s hard to miss games for work.”

Many non-league players often find themselves torn between being able to play part-time, whilst also supporting themselves and maintaining a normal family life.

He added: “It obviously means I’m unable to spend as much time with my family and friends. I can’t spend as much time with my girlfriend, Ellie, and that takes its toll sometimes.”

However, despite the struggles that come along with playing non-league football, the opportunity to continue playing is one that is too great.

“It’s the closest thing to being a professional footballer for a normal guy like me. I pay nothing to be involved but I get a lot out of it,” he added.

“The club is great with fantastic facilities. With football always being a pivotal part of my life, I’ve always wanted to be a part of this club. Hopefully one day I can follow after my dad and captain the first team.

“The pathway is always open to the first team, but I know it’s all about hard work and determination. I know that if I do then you’ve got the chance to be noticed.”
