Mitch Husbands bagged a brace as Worksop Town returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 4-0 victory at Armthorpe Welfare.

Those Husbands goals added to strikes from Kyle Jordan and fit-again Conor Higginson, as Tigers closed the gap on leaders Tadcaster to a point.

Worksop dominated the early possession, forcing a couple of early chances as Jack Waddle fizzed a low cross across the six-yard box and Jamie Hadfield headed wide from a corner.

A swift counter attack led by Jake Scott ended with a half chance for Jordan, but he could only force his shot at the keeper from a tight angle.

Chances then came at both ends, Tom McLaughlin worked an opportunity for himself with some neat footwork but fired over for the hosts, before a Jordan shot was easily saved by the keeper.

The breakthrough came for Tigers on 22 minutes when a fluid move was clinically finished by Higginson, the vice captain marking his first start of the season with a goal.

Worksop were a constant threat on the counter attack, with Jordan forcing another save out of Leigh Overton.

The second goal was coming, and deservedly arrived in the third minute of stoppage time, Higginson firing a ball across the box that was expertly finished by Jordan.

Tigers started the second half well, Scott meeting a corner but seeing his header deflected over.

Then Husbands saw a goal-bound effort blocked by a defender.

On 68 minutes it was 3-0 when Steve Woolley chipped a cross to the back post, and Tom Elliott put it on a plate for Husbands who applied the finish.

Tigers were starting to tear the Armthorpe defence apart, Jordan Cooke saw a header cleared off the line from a corner, before Woolley fired a free-kick wide.

Overton then produced a fantastic save to deny Hadfield from a corner – his header looked a goal all the way, but the keeper threw himself to his left and tipped the ball away.

Substitute Conor Sellars then twisted and turned past the defence to set up Husbands, but the ball was just behind him and he could only pull it wide.

Another chance soon followed for Husbands, good play from Andy Ofosu allowed Sellars to cross the ball in, and there was Husbands to apply the finish and seal the result on 90 minutes.
