Local lad Cavell was in the Worksop youth ranks in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and remembers manager Ronnie Reid making room on the team bus to away matches to encourage the youngsters.
He made his first team debut at the age of 17, scoring in a 1-0 home win over Gainsborough Trinity at Central Avenue on 27th January 1982.
He was pretty much ever present in the Northern Premier League team the following season, scoring 13 goals.
He was top scorer in a season where re-election to the league was needed come May.
Cavell scored a further 14 goals in 1983-4 and 22 in 1984-5, but only six in 1985-6 after an injury reduced season.
He was back up to 18 goals in 1986-7 before leaving for higher things in the summer.
He initially moved to Goole Town before being sold to Stafford Rangers for £5,000.
A move to Boston United in 1990 saw a £7,000 fee involved. A transfer to Dagenham came in 1992. Whilst with Dagenham he represented England at Non-league level and went on to return to Boston United via Purfleet in 1997.
Moves to Gainsborough and Matlock followed and since retiring from playing Cavell has coached extensively and scouted for Dagenham during their Football League days.
The Central Avenue faithful will remember Paul with great affection and, like all club “Legends,” is always welcome at Sandy Lane.
