Worksop boss Shaw on his future, calls for his head and the FA Vase

A section of the Tigers fanbase have called for the boss to step down after what he admits has been a disappointing 2016/17 season so far.

But Shaw insists he’s working harder than ever to turn the club’s fortunes around on the pitch.

This week he’s brought defender Jamie Hadfield back to the club and has made seven day approaches for other players, one of whom he’s confident of signing next week.

With Worksop sat 13th in the NCEL Premier however, the manager acknowledges things could be better.

“From my point of view it hasn’t been going well on or off the pitch, both things go hand in hand,” he said.

“On the pitch we’re working very hard.

“It’s become a very competitive league with Cleethorpes and six or seven teams in the chasing pack.

“We’ve lost games in the last minute and not had the rub of the green, and mistakes are still part and parcel of the way we’ve played.

“It’s not gone as well as I would have hoped this season and that’s majorly disappointing.”

Even so, Shaw is in no mood to walk.

And he doesn’t feel the calls for his head are justified.

“I think it’s a bit harsh to ask me to go after putting in so much time and effort over four seasons now,” he said.

“It’s a bit disappointing that people have such short memories and those people are probably people who don’t help the chairman and his wife and the club.

“I’m here to do a job for the club and if the club doesn’t want me to be here we’ll have that conversation, but it’s never been brought up with me.

“I’m endeavouring to make things better and will continue to do so and hopefully we’ll soon turn the corner.”

Former Sheffield FC man Hadfield has returned to Sandy Lane and is likely to be joined by another new face in the next week or so.

Shaw says he hasn’t given up on getting Tigers back up the table.

“Jamie Hadfield returns to the club this week,” he revealed.

“We’ve put seven days in for a couple and I think one will definitely come in next week.

“I’m trying to strengthen the squad to give us an opportunity to get back up there.

“We still had a healthy gate at the last game at home, so the Worksop Town brand is still there.

“Maybe we should be looking at how we can improve everything at the club.”

On Saturday Shaw’s men make the long trip to Newton Aycliffe in the FA Vase, a competition that can yield rich rewards for non-league clubs at Worksop’s level.

He’s keen to overturn the Northern League side.

“We’ve got to go up there and try to get the win, go with no fear,” he said.

“They’re doing alright in their league and I have it on good advice that they’re a big, physical team who will try and beat us off the park.

“We’ve just got to play our game, like we did at the start of the season and get a result.”
