Woody ever score a better goal...?

CHRIS Wood has never scored a goal as good as the one he volleyed in against Mickleover last month – and he doubts he ever will again.

The full-back came off the bench at Sandy Lane, in front of over 800, to send a sublime shot into the top corner and draw Tigers level in a game they went on to win in dramatic fashion.

Reflecting on the spectacular goal-of-the-season candidate, the 24-year-old told the Guardian: “I think that’s the best goal I’ve ever scored and I don’t think I’ll do it again.”

“I was a bit disappointed to be left out so when I got the call from the gaffer to warm up I just wanted to come on and do my best.”

“Luckily the ball fell to me and I took a chance, it was nice to see it go in.”

Wood is a Worksop lad, and after making the left-back position his own last season, has found himself in and out of the starting 11 during the current campaign.

His recent run of games have boosted his morale, as he strives to achieve success in the colours of his home town, but he admits no one has the right to call a shirt number their own at Tigers.

“All the lads want to do well for Worksop Town, but I’ve got a lot of friends who come and watch the games and people who see me around town. I want to do my best for them and see us move up the league.”

“I’m just happy to be back in the team.”

“There’s a lot of competition for places, which is good for the team, everybody has to play well to keep their place.”

Almost three weeks after putting in a Man of the Match performance in Tigers’ famous victory over Conference Premier side Tamworth, Wood and his team-mates are still on a high.

The former Mansfield Town defender took great satisfaction from the clean sheet he and the back line secured, along with the tactics Worksop employed successfully to book a place in the second round of the FA Trophy.

“I think we all enjoyed it,” he said.

“The gaffer told us about them and the way they would play, we worked on our tactics quite a bit in training and I think we got it spot on.”

“We defended well, we’ve got players who are good on the counter attack and quite a lot of pace.”

While there are league games to concentrate on between now and 14th January when Newport County visit in the next round of the Trophy, Wood concedes the squad are allowing themselves to look forward to the tie.

“Like the gaffer we take it one game at a time, but at the back of our minds is another tough game in the Fa Trophy.”

“There’s no reason why we can’t win that one if we perform like we did against Tamworth, I’m really looking forward to it.”

The one-game-at-a-time approach has helped Tigers put together a fine run of form under manager Simon Clark and his assistant Dave Frecklington, and Wood is hoping the good times will continue.

“No disrespect to the previous management but if the gaffers had been here from the start of the season I know we would be a lot higher up the league.”

“We just want to go out and win the next game and see where it takes us – the playoffs are quite a mountain to climb but not impossible.”

“We’re all buzzing and the more success we have the more people will come down to Sandy Lane, the better things will be for the club.”
