Why Worksop Town keeper will need to be on his toes

Goalkeeping coach John Hood knows Worksop Town’s new number one Sebastian Malkowski will need to keep his focus.

Hood has worked with Malkowski at the likes of Frickley Athletic and Pontefract Collieries, meaning that they have a good working relationship which helped Pontefract to only concede six goals in 14 home league games before the season was declared null and void.

Malkowski is a one-time Polish international, making his sole cap in a friendly against Lithuania in 2011, where he played alongside players such as Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and former Borussia Dortmund winger Jakub Błaszczykowski.

Hood stated: “With Paz [Craig Parry] and [Craig] Rouse’s attacking football, you always have to be concentrating all the time and that is what I am going to drill into Seb.

“I will make sure to keep him on his toes and it worked last season with the fact that we only conceded six goals at home and this year we will be hoping to concede even less.

“I have worked with Seb at a few different clubs now and I know that he does not like losing, like myself – if you can’t win, don’t play is one of my mottos.

“He also hates conceding goals; even if it is just one goal and we win the game 3-1, he just hates conceding.

“In my opinion, you do not need to do too much with Seb because he knows that he wants to be number one and knows how to achieve that.

“He is one of his biggest critics; if he makes a mistake then he knows straight away, you do not have to tell him – he is really good to work with.”

The Tigers’ pre-season training began last weekend. Hood disclosed that he will not be needing to change his training methods, despite the completion of the club’s brand-new 3g FIFA quality pro pitch.

“We haven’t really had to change anything regarding the 3g surface and our training,” said Hood.

“It is a very good surface and is similar to a normal grass pitch as it is, so there isn’t too much to change, it is mostly just a mental thing with goalkeepers.

“We just need to drill into him about keeping concentrated and maintaining that winning mentality.”
