Jimmy Williams discussed the importance of leadership and versatility in the squad as the experienced defender begins his new chapter at Worksop Town.

Williams is another player who has made the switch to the Tigers from Pontefract Collieries alongside manager Craig Parry, writes Devon Cash.

Williams played with and under Parry during his time with the Colls, captaining the side on several occasions due to the trust that the management team have admitted that they have with him.

He will be an important figure in a rather young squad, who may rely on players like Williams, Jake Picton and James Baxendale to keep them in line.

The versatile defender said: “I think leadership in any team is important, but it isn’t just me who can be a leader, there are many leaders in the group that Craig has brought in.

“A captain is a leader, but there are a lot of others who have captained at clubs elsewhere.

“I will play wherever I am asked to play, whether it be right-back, centre-back or in midfield. They know that I will do a job wherever they put me because I just enjoy playing football.

“Craig is brilliant as a manager and it was good to play with him, Rousey (Craig Rouse, assistant), Jeffsy (Luke Jeffs, head coach) and Whitey (Mark Whitehouse, first-team coach) – it was great to play with all of them.

“I have known them for many years, so I am delighted to come here with them and build something here at Worksop.”

Williams also placed on record his excitement about playing for the Tigers, admitting that the squad has the potential to challenge at the top of the table this year.

“It feels good to be joining Worksop Town,” said Williams. “It is a new experience and is something a bit different to the task we had at Pontefract, but I am excited and can’t wait to get going and hopefully we can have a successful year.

“The pitch looks a million dollars at the minute, it is a lot different to the surface that we played on at Ponte, but I cannot wait to get going on here and I am looking forward to it."
