Sheffield Wednesday have continued their summer spending spree with the signing of Watford midfielder Lewis McGugan.

The Nottingham-born player has joined for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £300,000, penning a three-year deal. McGugan’s arrival takes Wednesday’s recruitment drive up to eight.

McGugan joined the Hornets from Nottingham Forest in 2013 and caught the eye during his first season despite the club’s poor league finish, scoring 11 goals in 37 appearances.

The 26-year-old started last season in Watford’s first-team but was frozen out under Slavisa Jokanovic and was subsequently sent to Hillsborough on a short-term loan last November. He played seven times before returning to Vicarage Road in January.

Jokanovic stopped McGugan and four other players from training with the senior side and he left to re-join the Owls on loan at the beginning of February until the end of the season. In his two spells, McGugan featured 22 times, netting three goals.

He has been on the Owls’ radar for some time and will add some much-needed creativity and class to their midfield engine room. McGugan may get his first run-out since his permananent transfer at York City on Saturday.
