Up for the cup

A ROB Sanderson goal was enough to see Retford United progress in the FA Cup on Saturday, at the expense of a former boss.

Badgers travelled to Evo-Stik side Hucknall Town to face their old Manager, Brett Marshall and several of their former players.

The starting line up for the hosts featuring seven of the Retford United Championship winning side from last season, with only Adam Scott remaining in the black and white stripes.

There was an early chance for the visitors when Danny Frost tried to take advantage of Jason Fisher’s poor clearance but the defence cleared.

Kyle Hadley set up Adam Scott but the ball was nicked from his toe, and then Rob Austin defended another Hadley cross.

Sanderson was a real threat for Badgers, heading wide and then testing Fisher from a dangerous set-piece.

For Hucknall, Kyle Ludlow volleyed over the bar when well placed.

The sides went in at the break level, but it was the visitors who had the better of the chances.

On 54 minutes their pressure paid off as Scott won a free-kick on the left, the ball was floated in and Sanderson rose to power a header past Fisher for what was an eventual match winner.

The goal seemed to kick start Hucknall who had a spell of pressure, Karl Slack’s near post header was saved by Jack Ward, then Brown’s header was cleared for a corner.

A goalmouth scramble after a flick on by Austin had Retford hearts in mouths, Ward bravely dropping to smother the ball before Slack could get a touch.
