Tuxford Academy footballers in trophy double at pro grounds

Tuxford Academy’s Year 8 football team picked up the Notts County Cup, after a visit to Meadow Lane, the home of Notts County.

The youngsters, who have had a season to remember, drew 0-0 with Ashfield School to share the trophy with their opponents.

But they went one better the following week, defeating Joseph Whittaker School from Rainworth 5-4 on penalties in the Mansfield Town Cup.

The nail-biting game finished 2-2 after extra-time with Zach Casburn scoring both goals at the Stags’ ground Field Mill.

Mr Thompson, who is responsible for coaching the football team, said: “It has been a fantastic week for the boys.”

“To play on the grounds of two professional teams in the space of a week is unbelievable and something boys will never forget.”

Just as successful were the academy’s Year 9 boys’ football team who reached the final of the Mansfield Town Cup, defeating Joseph Whittaker 3-2 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1.

Sam Partridge scored an outstanding goal which was a result of some fantastic build up play.

The year 9s have also reached the final of the Notts County Cup where they will face George Spencer Academy from Nottingham on Wednesday 19th June.

Geoff Lloyd, principal at Tuxford Academy watched the match and said: “Both teams played extremely well.”

“It was a nerve-wrecking game and the level on skill from both sides was impressive.”

“It is a brilliant end to the season for the Tuxford boys.”
