Toyne hails five star side

The Phoenix Park side bounced back from Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hemsworth to record a 5-2 thrashing of fourth-placed Albion Sports in midweek.

And manager Steve Toyne was purring about the performance put in by his men, especially after the break at Albion.

Greg Ramsden put Dinnington ahead with a volley before Sports hit back.

Jon Roper cut inside from the flank to fire home for 2-1, and the hosts equalised once again after a slip from stand-in right-back Daniel Flynn.

Toyne said the leveller served as a wake up call for Town.

“It was as though someone had poked a Tiger with a stick,” he said.

“We set off and paralysed them, in the last 40 minutes we over ran them completely, the football was as good as anything we’ve played at the club.”

Interplay between Jon Roper and Matt Smith ended in a beautiful curling effort from Martin Wade that found the top corner to put Town ahead once more, before Liam Cartledge took the ball down in the area, swivelled and made it 4-2.

The final goal was described as a ‘screamer’ by Toyne, as youngster Michael Trench hit a low drive from 30 yards.

It was a fitting response to Saturday’s loss at the hands of Hemsworth Miners Welfare, a result that snapped an eight-game unbeaten run.

Toyne said: “We should have won 5-2 on Saturday as well.”

“How we lost no one will ever know.”

Town face another tough away day on Saturday as they visit top-three side Glasshoughton Welfare.

The manager added: “I hope it’s not a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ on Saturday.”

l TOWN’S reserves dished out a 7-0 mauling of Rainworth Miners Welfare on Saturday with midfielder Tom Fairweather bagging an incredible six-goal haul.

Speaking on the double hat-trick first team boss Toyne told the Guardian: “For a midfielder to get six is an outstanding feat, especially for a young lad. It’s the feat of the season.”

The reserves host Mickleover Sports on Saturday at 3pm.
