Town’s two on the trot

Dinnington Town recorded their second victory of the season to leapfrog their opponents and move off the bottom of the NCEL Division One table on Saturday.

The 3-2 win over Appleby Frodingham was Dinnington’s second win in quick succession, and came away from home.

Manager Steve Toyne was forced to make four changes from the team that defeated Teversal last week, due to injuries and suspensions, but welcomed back Jason Slew, Jamie Roper, Lewis Whittaker and new signing Adam Ykhlef.

As in recent games, Town were dominant early on, and on six minutes Man of the Match Liam Cartledge forced the home keeper into a fine save with a firm volley, after Martin Wade’s cross.

Town’s supporters did not have to wait long, however, before they had a goal to celebrate, as Jason Slew pace allowed him to outstrip the home defence and fire home a powerful shot.

In the next 15 minutes Town reverted to their previous defensive bad habits, gifting the hosts a flattering 2-1 half-time lead.

At the start of the second half, Tom Elliot repaced Ykhelf and his influence was immediately apparent as Town dominated play.

Cartledge’s heading ability was always a threat and after 62 minuts he scored with a floated header at the far post to level the scores. T

hey continued to press forward and the home side only threatened briefly on the counter attack.

Elliot was at the centre of Town’s attacking efforts and narrowly failed on two occasions to open his account.

But it was that man Cartledge who stole the headlines and points with a strong left foot shot after a run by Lanzel Reid.
