Town side set for historic county final

The two sides will do battle in the prestigious Lincs County Junior Cup final, at Lincoln City’s Sincil Bank ground on Tuesday 9th April.

And it will be the first time in their history that the Gainsborough Town side will have reached the final two.

The local club suffered the heartache of losing in three previous semi-finals, and would end a 100 year wait for any Gainsborough team to pick up the trophy.

Manager Richard Mallett told the Standard that he wants his men to go out and make the town proud next week.

“This would be an achievement that the whole of Gainsborough could be extremely proud of,” he said.

“And it would be another reason for the town to celebrate its sporting prowess.”

The club was formed in 2004 under its original name ‘Smiffys FC’, beginning life in the Gainsborough and District Saturday Football League.

Following some success in this league they moved to the Scunthorpe Saturday League, playing a high standard of football for three seasons.

On returning to the Gainsborough League they defeated all before them under their new name Gainsborough Town Canute.

And last season they decided to challenge themselves further by moving into the Lincoln Saturday Football League.

A league and cup double followed, and prompted another step up, to the Lincs Football League.

Town currently sit third in the league, and Mallett, who formed the team, says a cup triumph would be a fine reward for the hard work of the club’s committee.

“Club secretary Gordon Nichol and groundsman Ken Lill both give up their weekends to keep the club running smoothly, along with assistant managers Ben Noble and Noel McBurney.”

“This group of Gainsborough footballers, from all walks of life, have the opportunity to write their names in the history books and continue to raise Gainsborough’s profile in the area.”
