Tigers U19s crash out of League Cup

TIGERS Under 19s crashed out of the League Cup at the second round stage, with a 2-1 loss at Staveley Miners Welfare.

Second half goals from Kurtis Morley and a James Whitfield penalty cancelled out Alex Nightingale’s opener in the first half.

It was expected that Staveley would provide the Tigers with their toughest game of the season and so it proved as initially Worksop struggled to come to term with the tempo.

But Tigers started to pass the ball around well, and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 16 minutes when Nightingale clipped the ball past the advancing ‘keeper, Sam West.

The goal galvanised the home side and it was Staveley who finished the half the stronger and only the offside flag denied them an equaliser just before half-time.

Staveley started the second half as they finished the first, finally getting a deserved equaliser on 70 minutes when Morley scored direct from a free kick from 22 yards out.

Minutes later the Tigers thought they had retaken the lead when Reece Twell lobbed the keeper and the ball appeared to have crossed the line before Lewis Haywood got back to hook the ball clear.

On 77 minutes Staveley took the lead their play merited when Whitfield slotted home a penalty after Gibson was bungled over by Rob Fenton.

Tigers had a glorious chance to equalise deep into added time when Adam Powell with only the keeper to beat from six yards out shot too close to West, allowing him to make the save.

The U19s are back in league action on Monday 15th October, away at Arnold Town, with a 19.45 kick off.
