Worksop Town sit just five points behind league leaders Chorley ahead of next week’s big clash in Lancashire, thanks to today’s 3-2 win over Stocksbridge.
Just like their last two outings, Worksop didn’t play particularly well, but they still know where the net is and they know how to pick up three points.
While Tigers have picked up nine points from three games, Chorley – who drew with Witton today – have earned just two.
At Sandy Lane, Worksop did enough to get past Steels, although they made plenty of chances .
Right-back Alex Pursehouse was particularly impressive going forward, and on 26 minutes he found Leon Mettam, the skipper found Tom Denton and it was 1-0.
The next goal came at the other end, dangerman Nathan Joynes allowed far too much time to pick his shot from 18 yards, Stewart beaten by the simple finish.
But within seconds it was 2-1, Shane Clarke bursting through the middle and dinking the ball over a defender before lashing home on the half volley.
After an earful from boss Mark Shaw at the break, Tigers came out and almost immediately doubled their lead - ex Worksop player Ben Turner holding down Denton in the box to concede a penalty that Mettam stroked home.
Steels just wouldn’t go away, pulling one back before the hour mark through a quick free-kick, Tigers napping as Matt Telling found the net.
Worksop did add a fourth on 61 minutes, Mettam glancing home Marc Goodfellow’s free-kick, the linesman’s flag chalking off the effort.
Conor Higginson had two chances to ease the nerves around the ground but fired off target, and then agonisingly across goal.
And in the final stages, with Steels up attacking a corner, Worksop broke through Jamie Jackson, the replacement streaking forward and ignoring Evan Garnett in the middle, before blasting into the side netting.
