Tigers’ local boy Wood departs

The 25-year-old, formerly of Mansfield Town and Boston United, made 106 appearances for his home town side, scoring twice in the process.

Although right-footed, Wood predominantly played at left-back for Tigers.

Manager Simon Clark lauded the attitude and work ethic displayed by the defender, even while he was out of favour this season.

“He’s been nothing but brilliant for me,” said Clark.

“He’s a good trainer, he’s given me great service and he’ll get a move because he’s got pedigree.”

“We’ve chatted for the last few months and he came to training last night and said he didn’t want to sit in the stand, he wants to play – I understand his decision fully.”

Worksop Town have retained Wood’s registration, in case of an injury crisis, until a move is finalised.

Clark said that an ‘evolving’ squad and the form of other defenders had left Wood in a difficult situation.

“From when I took over 15 months ago until now the squad has evolved and we’ve raised the bar a little bit.”

“Woody came in against Hednesford and was excellent, but at Eastwood he got done twice and he didn’t really come back from that.”

“With the form of Ryan Clarke at right-back, and my centre-halves doing reasonably well, it’s been difficult for him.”

“I know I’ve played him at left-back, but he’s not a left-back.”

“He loves the club, and the supporters, but he wants to play.”

Wood was signed for Tigers by Peter Rinkcavage and was a consistent performer in the 2010/11 season, staying in the side when Martin McIntosh took over.

Last season he played 48 times for the club, scoring a memorable goal at home to Mickleover in a 5-4 victory.
