Worksop Town have extended their season by at least one game, after booking a play-off place with a 1-0 victory over Marine on Tuesday night.

The win came on a poignant evening in Liverpool, with a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone followed by an impeccable minute’s silence for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

The hosts were out of the blocks quickly, a ball whipped in for Will Jones forcing Jon Stewart into a fine save, Marine then wasted the corner.

Industry, pace and a bit of luck then brought the opener, and it was the visiting side who grabbed it, Jack Muldoon finding Phil Roe in the box, the full-back got to the byline and when his cross was spilled by keeper Callum Williams, Shane Clarke poked home.

It should have been 1-1 when Jones went clean through, leaving Warren Burrell for dead, but the home fans sighed as he put the ball wide with only Stewart to beat.

Marine could count themselves lucky to keep 11 men on the pitch after Josh Sumner went right through Clarke, referee Patrick Mahon deciding it was only a yellow card - and he showed the same to Leon Mettam for his reaction.

The game settled into a hum drum period, with little in the way of quality.

Tigers suffered from a lack of height up front, Stewart’s long kicks simply headed back by Marine.

In the final minute of the half Worksop finally got the ball wide to Alex Pursehouse in space, and it was worked into the middle Mettam’s cross was knocked over the bar by a defender.

With three pacy strikers in the starting 11, they finally put that speed to good use in the opening minutes of the second half, Muldoon putting Jackson into space, only a sliding Williams halting his run.

Stewart, who did very little wrong all evening, palmed Jonathan Goulding’s cross over the bar and seconds later made a smart save with his legs from Andy Fowler’s blast.

Tigers rarely strung more than a few passes together, but there was one fine opportunity when Muldoon put Jackson in, he challenged Williams’ clearance and gathered the ball, but somehow sidefooted wide of the open goal.

Marine had a gilt edged chance of their own when a corner came all the way through to Dale Wright, his volley hit John Shaw and Fowler headed wide.

Mark Shaw sent on Tom Denton with 14 minutes remaining, the targetman replacing Muldoon.

Straight into the action, he flicked on to Mettam who lashed his shot well over.

A stout defensive effort protected the clean sheet, and Tigers now look forward to a play-off semi-final tie.
