Worksop Town Football Club is alive and kicking, thanks to the fundraising efforts of supporters and the backing of local companies.

More than 300 #Team500 Club memberships have been sold, raising £62,800 for the world’s fourth oldest football club.

That money, along with sponsorship deals and fundraising events, has – at the very least – secured the short term future of the Tigers.

Former England manager Graham Taylor, golfers Lee Westwood and Mark Foster and footballers like Ian Bennett have joined local politicians, the Worksop Guardian and local businesses like the Grafton in backing the club.

But the long term future is by no means assured.

Although Worksop are putting together a strategy for becoming a fully self sustaining organisation, the fundraising efforts will need to continue right throughout the season to ensure they can approach the 2015/16 season with confidence, and the season after that, and so on.

To join #Team500 and help support the town’s football team, visit their website or call into the Guardian office for an application form.

Members, paying the £200 fee, get free entry to Tigers matches and a range of discounts on local goods and services.
