support the lads

DINNINGTON Town will celebrate a turnaround in fortunes on Saturday, and they want you to join them.

The Phoenix Park club’s season appeared to be doomed at Christmas after a poor run of form, but 2012 has seen a complete resurgence.

And a win in Saturday’s finale at home to lowly Grimsby Borough is liklely to seal a top 10 finish in the NCEL Division One table.

Boss Steve Toyne called upon local football fans to come out and celebrate the end of the season with his side.

He told the Guardian: “In a way it’s a relief to be finishing the season, but in another way it’s disappointing because we’ve been on such a good run.”

“We were disappointed to draw 3-3 away with 10 men on Saturday, that shows how far we’ve come.”

“The players deserve to have a crowd there on Saturday, we want everyone to come along, have a cup of tea and a bite to eat and give us a financial boost to help us through the summer.”

Toyne credited two local lads with major roles in revitalising Dinnington’s season, including the player who was red carded in Saturday’s draw at Yorkshire Amateur, Laughton youngster Michael Trench.

“Goalkeeper Luke Hands lives opposite the ground and he has been very influential, he’s been outstanding,” said the manager.

“Michael Trench got sent off on Saturday, but we weren’t happy with the officials who claimed he dived for a penalty when it was a stonewall spot-kick.”

“He’s been excellent since he came in, made such a difference to the team and he’s a big influence on the way we play as a team.”

“His dead balls have been outstanding and he epitomises our will to win.”

The manager also sang the praises of everyone who has played their part in keeping Town going, despite ongoing financial difficulties.

“We’ll be eternally grateful to all the local people and businesses who have contributed, no matter how small.”

“Mainly we have to thank shirt sponsor Andy Abbasi for his help.”

Town’s 3-3 draw with Yorkshire Amateur on Saturday was their sixth game unbeaten in a row.

Javan Benjamin put the home side in front but Dinnington hit back through Matthew Smith and James Roper.

Trench was then given his marching orders for picking up his second yellow card.

Craig Heard levelled at 2-2 in the second half, but Smith’s second goal on 85 minutes, which Toyne described as a ‘cracker’, looked to have given the points to Dinnington.

Carl Heard had other ideas however, equalising with three minutes remaining to secure a share of the spoils.

Dinnington entertain Grimsby Borough at 3pm at Phoenix Park.
