Sunday League ready to kick off again in Worksop

Sunday football was introduced to the town in 1963 by two gentlemen discussing the sport over a beer in the Station Hotel, Jack Tarr and main protagonist Sailor Pettinger.

The league initially started with 11 teams in its first season.

During its pomp the league accommodated 57 teams across an impressive five divisions.

The league has been ably supported by a committee of steadfast individuals over many years with Dave Northage and Dave Crisp pivotal to the functioning of Sunday Football.

Both men have been involved with the league from the early 1970s.

The new season will get underway this Sunday, although it will have a slightly different feel to the previous campaign.

While numbers have reduced the league will run two divisions for the forthcoming season.

There will also be two cup competitions held to boost the number of matches played.

Losing teams last season was inevitable but disappointing, especially as one of the longest-serving teams, Worksop Borough, folded and St Joseph’s moved into Saturday football.

Games will take place across the Worksop area throughout the season (Costhorpe, Kilton, Manton Club, Raymouth Lane, Shireoaks and Sandy Lane).

All games kick off at 11am.
