SJR Worksop wont stand in way of players who receive offers from higher levels

After being handed promotion in their first season as Step 7, Guest is naturally expecting the spotlight to be shone on some of his players.

With a number of players in his squad used to playing further up the ladder – including ex-Tigers prospect Reece Twell, Guest says he simply wants his players to make the most of their talent.

“Things are booming at the moment with the Ladies’ and reserves teams both starting next season,” Guest said. “We’re also looking to start an educational academy too, but that is a way off yet.

“We wanted to get the reserves team going because the local lads need something to play for. Young lads now play for a side until they hit 18 and then they have nowhere to go and they all stop playing.

“We need local lads to be playing football, we can’t let them waste their talent. You look at Reece Twell - he hadn’t played for five years when he signed for us. We got him back playing with us and he’s flying.

“People say a lot of the Worksop lads aren’t good enough to make the grade, but when I see players like Reece, Tom Mullen, Tommy Durrant and Ben Brown, it’s hard to agree with those people.

“In our last game before lockdown, Paul Cavell helped me run things and he said without a doubt Reece Twell should be playing higher. Cav has played in the Conference himself, so he knows his stuff.

“Reece was the big talk around town a few years ago and then he just stopped, didn’t want to play. It’s the little things like the end of last season, he sent

me a message just saying thanks for getting him back playing and helping him enjoy his football again.”

Putting your prized assets in the shop window would probably make some managers lose sleep at night, not Guest, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“If Reece ends up catching the eye again and doing well, the club is already serving its purpose. It’s just good to see all the best players from Worksop playing together.

“All I’ve told Reece is to only go upwards. There’s no point in him moving sideways but if someone comes in and offers him £200-a-week to play three levels above then I’ve told him to take it. You’ve got to get the best out of yourself.”
